Portrait of a Young Man was created around 1513 and was believed to be created by Raphael. Raphael is recognized as the greatest High Renaissance painter. He was both very prolific and extremely versatile in his work. Like his father, he became a court painter and also received much of his early training in the court. He was well known for his Madona paintings and as a portraitist. The Portrait of a Young Man is widely thought to be a self-portrait of Raphael. This work of art was stolen by the Germans during the WWII. The portrait was last seen at Wawel Castle in Krakow Poland in 1945. It has been estimated that if Portrait of a Youn Man were recovered, it would now be worth more than 100 million dollars. I chose this portrait for its lively and entertaining idea of a self-portrait. The hat looked fun to recreate, but I especially liked his facial expression. I was drawn to his sideways glance and even wondered what he might be thinking or trying to communicate.
In recreating this portrait, we found the costume items, found a window to position my subject near and made sure the hat was slouched at as near the same angle as we could get it to stay. Because the facial expression and the sideways glance were the focus of the portrait, we worked to get it as accurate as we could. Our window was too close and large, but it was on the correct side and was available.
